Marylebone Station Power Upgrade Works

The project was jointly funded between Network Rail and Chiltern Railways, and provided short term benefits for Chiltern Railway regarding the facility to expand Tenancy provision, and long term benefits to Network Rail, regarding improved electrical infrastructure and capacity for future additional equipment installations.

INVVU Construction Consultants were appointed to carry out electrical surveys and load monitoring tests on the LV Electrical Distribution network at Marylebone Station to identify causes of repeated power failures which were causing severe disruption to the operation of the station. Following review of the results, the decision was made to carry out power upgrades to the station and INVVU Construction Consultnats were commissioned to carry out a Feasibility Study on the power consumption at Marylebone Station, providing short, medium and long term solutions to improve the power distribution and provide additional capacity for future expansion.

Following review of the study, the decision was made to carry out short and medium term solutions over a number of phased work packages, to prevent further power failures and provide a more stable power supply.

Long term solutions were then put in place to upgrade the DNO power supply to provide 800kVA capacity, which comprised of a new HV Sub-station at basement level, within an existing structural arch, new transformer installation by UK Power Networks and upgrading of existing switchgear.

INVVU Construction Consultnats were commissioned to provide the design for the powered upgrade and provide project management and technical support throughout the contract, from the construction stage, through to final inspection and handover.

As part of the power upgrade project, the opportunity was taken to improve phase balancing to the distribution and to segregate the Operational power supplies from the Retail power supplies, which assisted with metering power usage and simplified the billing procedure. INVVU Construction Consultants were engaged to provide the full design package for this works which comprised of cable and containment design distribution, specification of LV Switchboards and associated enabling works. Due to the building being Grade II listed, Listed Building Control was required by Westminster, which formed part of INVVU's remit.

The following improvements were achieved as a result of the power upgrade project:

Increase electrical capacity for future expansion (Retail and Operational)
Improved phase balancing on existing LV distribution.
Removal of power failure incidents due to provision of increased capacity.
Simplified billing arrangements due to supply segregation between Tenant and Operational supplies.
